Student of the Month

- Tandia McLaren -

Tandia McLaren
Tandia McLaren

  • Please share with our readers a little bit of your non-martial arts background.

I am a sophomore at Lawrence High School. I spend most of my time drawing and I love art. On Sundays I go to Japanese school where I take classes in Japanese. On the weekends I also play guitar in a band with my brother Col and his friends.

  • When did you first start training at PAMA?

I first started training when I was about ten years old in the Children's Program.

  • How do you think that the Children's program at PAMA prepared you for your present training?

Learning the basics in the Children's class really helped me with my present training. It gave me a solid foundation to build upon.

  • What made you first interested in Martial Arts?

My parents took me to the children's class in the beginning just to get me to do something active. I did not think much of it then, but I started to enjoy it when I moved out of the children's class and started to do more advanced training.

  • What are some of the key things that Martial Arts has taught you?

Martial Arts has taught me that it is important to really focus and push myself to get better.

  • What are your favorite arts and why?

My favorite is Jun Fan because it seems like the most useful art. It makes me feel more confident about being able to protect myself. I also find Kali interesting because of how I can use a variety of weapons with what I learn in class.

  • Anything else you would like to add?

I would like to thank everyone who helped me improve for their time and patience.

Sifu Recommends a Book

- The Prophet by Khalil Gibran -

The Prophet by Khalil Gibran
The Prophet by Khalil Gibran

Kahlil Gibran's masterpiece, The Prophet, is one of the most beloved classics of our time. Published in 1923, it has been translated into more than twenty languages, and the American editions alone have sold more than nine million copies.

The Prophet
is a collection of poetic essays that are philosophical, spiritual, and, above all, inspirational. Gibran's musings are divided into twenty-eight chapters covering such sprawling topics as love, marriage, children, giving, eating and drinking, work, joy and sorrow, housing, clothes, buying and selling, crime and punishment, laws, freedom, reason and passion, pain, self-knowledge, teaching, friendship, talking, time, good and evil, prayer, pleasure, beauty, religion, and death.

Each essay reveals deep insights into the impulses of the human heart and mind. The Chicago Post said of The Prophet: "Cadenced and vibrant with feeling, the words of Kahlil Gibran bring to one's ears the majestic rhythm of Ecclesiastes . . . If there is a man or woman who can read this book without a quiet acceptance of a great man's philosophy and a singing in the heart as of music born within, that man or woman is indeed dead to life and truth."

With twelve full-page drawings by Gibran, this beautiful work makes an incredible gift for anyone seeking enlightenment and inspiration.
