PAMA’s Third Annual Silat Seminar Was Both Educational and Enlightening

by Bernie Dudley

PAMA’s third annual Silat seminar featuring Guro Rick Tucci featured several highlights that made it an outstanding event for all persons who attended. This year Guro Rick shared with seminar attendees not only his knowledge of the physical techniques of the many styles of Silat throughout Southeast Asia, he also shared with them profound insights into the internal aspects of the Martial Arts in general. Beginning the seminar with an overview of the origins and history of Silat, Guro Rick then went on to discuss and display from his personal collection the myriad of weapons developed and utilized by various Silat practitioners. Guro Rick pointed out to the seminar attendees the Silat lineage that is unique to PAMA by naming and explaining in detail his personal Silat instructors and their respective styles.

Guro Rick covers the weapons of Silat as well as lineage and history.

Moving onto the physical aspects of the art, Guro Rick had everyone do various breathing drills from the Mande Muda style of Silat to energize the seminar participants. In addition to those breathing drills Guro Rick generously had his personal teacher Ratsa Geshe Tenzin Dargye, Khenpo of the Bon Monastery in Dhorpatan, Nepal briefly explain the breathing methods of the Bon tradition. Khenpo then lead the seminar participants in some of those ancient breathing exercises. Going deeper into the physical elements of silat, Guro Rick started with flexibility drills, leg strengthening drills and then moved on to sempaks, dempaks, and other demanding footwork drills. Guro Rick then introduced some of the curriculum of Harimau Silat. Harimau silat focuses on ground fighting with throws, strikes, tearing and breaking of joints.

After lunch Guro Rick then introduced the standup aspects of several other styles of Silat including, Bukti Negara Silat, Maphilndo Silat and Mande Muda Silat. Revisiting the weapons element of Silat, Guro Rick pointed out and provided an unforgettable demonstration of why training in martial arts requires facing the reality of weapons. Guro Rick then taught several methods of dealing with knife attacks. Staying with weapons Guro Rick gave instruction in several Silat techniques using the Sarong as a flexible weapon of devastating effectiveness.
