Student of the Month
- Larry Azzara -
What is your profession and background?
I have been a Union Iron Worker for the past 38 years. I supervise a team of workers that range from 4-25 people. My projects include commercial buildings, bridges, and other infra structures. The most recent job I was responsible for was the Pennsylvania Convention Center. I live in Marlton, New Jersey with my wife Suzanne and my canine companion Rudy. I have 2 children, a daughter Nicole, 33, expecting her first child in November and a son Anthony, 25, who has an adorable 11 month old son. I have always been interested in organic nutrition and physical fitness long before the craze. Also, over the years I have been pursuing a BS degree in Science and enjoyed over 20 years playing Ice Hockey.
What first turned you on to martial arts?
What interested me in the martial arts is the blend of self defense, physical fitness, discipline, and that it teaches you to deal with your inner self. I started to dabble in the arts in the early 80's and took some lessons off and on with some local martial arts studios in my area, which at the time did not make me want to pursue training anymore. However, I managed to try again in 1999 and took a Tang Do Soo class for about a year and later on, took Wing Chun for a year but never really found the right fit of teaching that I was comfortable with until I started working with the PAMA team. This is the first time I ever stayed with one school for more than one year.
What was your motivation for coming to PAMA?
I came to PAMA because I was looking to get back into a martial art that followed Bruce Lee's philosophy.
I was impressed by the reputation the academy had and read many good articles about their teaching. I first joined the academy in 2007 and unfortunately did not attend classes on a regular basis. Over time, however, I realized that the more classes I attended, the better I felt. I have enjoyed the camaraderie and family atmosphere at PAMA and hopefully will continue my quest to become better.
What do you most enjoy about your training?
I enjoy training at PAMA because I feel revitalized when I am done taking a class and I feel it pushes my limitations to do things I would not normally do.
What are your goals you hope to achieve through martial arts?
My goals have been to accomplish discipline, inner peace, and confidence. I want to commit to venture into the many other arts PAMA offers and try to diversify my training. I feel that the more I learn the more I can accomplish my goals.
In what ways has your training at PAMA benefited your life outside of the Academy?
The training has benefited my physical and mental state of mind. My awareness and attitude has changed for the positive.
Any closing comments?
I would like to thank Sifu Rick and the PAMA staff for their time and patience and sharing their knowledge of the martial arts to me.

- 20th Pacific Northwest Muay Thai Camp -
2010 has been a year of memorable milestones. Not only did we celebrate the addition of PAMA's youngest member, Ilaria Tucci, but also Ajarn Chai's 20th Annual Pacific Northwest Muay Thai Camp held in Camp Wilkerson, Oregon.
Muay Thai was not known in the United States in 1968 when Ajarn Chai first started teaching. For the last forty-two years, Ajarn Chai has tirelessly taught and promoted the art of Muay Thai all over the world.
Many of this year's attendants were Ajarn Chai's first students. Led by camp perennial attendant Ajarn Greg Nelson, along with Bryan Dobbler, Frank Cucci, Terry Tippie, Rick Faye, Mike Parker, Bryan Popejoy, Ajarn Rex and Ajarn Kim Kongkriangkai, these individuals helped Ajarn Chai realize his dream of spreading his art of Muay Thai throughout the world. Ajarn Chai routinely pushed each one of his first students beyond their breaking point to separate those who were serious about Muay Thai from those who were not. To our benefit, these individuals' love of Muay Thai and dedication to learning the techniques helped paved the way for today's martial artists.
